The first day of autumn is September 22, 2026. And I can’t wait! I love the noticeable changes: cooler temperatures prevail, days become shorter and I can once again rummage through my closet in search of favorite sweaters.

The leaves of trees begin changing colors from green to lovely autumn shades of deep red, burnt orange, and golden brown.

My fall decorations come out of storage and I start to decorate the inside of the house using faux fall leaves, gourds and various sizes of pumpkins.

Outside containers are refreshed with plants that can take cooler temperatures. Chrysanthemums are plentiful in garden centers and come in bright colors.

Here are some containers I’ve created over the years.

I have two blue containers flanking the entrance. I change the plants according to the season.

I planted yellow mums, added small pumpkins, and gourds with sprigs of bittersweet.

One year I added cornhusks on both sides of the door.

My favorite urn planted for fall. I purchased 3 green gooseneck gourds at a local orchard and added them to my urn along with various colored pumpkins, ornamental kale, and mums.

I woke up today to a morning temperature of 58°. I put a warm sweater over my pajamas, and smiled.

Yay! It’s almost here. I can hardly wait!

Is it feeling like fall where you live?

    Pumpkins, gourds, leaves,and mums.
Wish it lasted for 6 months.

  2. Ah yes, you are getting me in the mood for autumn too! It was only 7°C when I got up his morning! Our garden centres will start selling Chrysanthemums soon too and I might splash out on a couple. Thanks for the lovely inspiration Ellen!

  3. wow, love your porch and all the lovely decor. Enjoy – we are still in the mid-80’s here. Looking forward to 70s and 60s, hope it is coming soon. Even though in the 80s, I am decked out for fall – waiting anxiously.
