I will hold on to warm days in the garden. Days of gentle breezes. Days with skies that hold the earth in a pallet of azure shades. Days when garden shadows play hide and seek between glints of light on flowering trees.

Days in the garden witnessing the wonders of succession of bloom. When one plant stops producing flowers another plant begins showing its loveliness.

I love the tiny yellow stamens that are on the Crape Myrtle Tree at the ends of the new shoots. They are small and easily missed if you walk by quickly. To slow the last days of summer I slow down, camera in hand.

When many plants cease to flower, Anemone ‘Honerine Jobert’ produces blooms late summer into fall. Elegant white flowers on long graceful stems beckon a closer look at the plump buds that hold a promise.

Anemone Pretty Lady Julia’s ruffled flower petals bloom on wiry stems with bright yellow stamens adding charm to the front of the border.

I will hold on to the last days of summer capturing moments in time of favorite plants.

The lemon-yellow blooms appear on “Happy Returns’ daylily. If you remove spent flower stalks the plant will re-bloom until frost.

The plant above with the tiny white flowers is: Calamintha; it’s beloved by bees and butterflies. I plant it in the front of the border and have continuous flowers until colder temperatures set in.

The clustered flowers of Sedum Autumn Joy in the photo above are pink; with cooler temperatures the flowers turn a beautiful shade of rosy red.

When Sedum Autumn Joy blooms in the garden, I know fall is here.

Caryopteris ‘Sunshine Blue’ adds interest with its bright-yellow leaves and amethyst flowers.

I will hold on to the last days of summer remembering Swallowtail butterflies visiting the garden.

I will hold on to the last summer days.

  1. OMG Tobby. Your gardens are so beautiful. I wish I could view them in person. Do you have people stop by to see them? You are blessed with a green thumb and a special gift. Enjoy, and thank you for sharing with us.

    1. Thank you Jean for your kind words. Sometimes neighbors stop by. I love looking out the kitchen window as I have a good view of the gardens.
When Jim & I are outside working in the beds it always makes for a lovely day surrounded by treasured plants. 💕
